The most common injury to the ankle is damage to the lateral ligament on the outside of the joint. Typically caused by ‘going over’ on the ankle, usually on an uneven surface or when up on the toes as in netball. X-ray may be necessary to rule out bony injury.
There is usually a rapid swelling especially around the outside of the ankle and pain when the foot is put to the ground.
The initial treatment is that of PRICE - protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation but physiotherapy treatment with ultrasound or interferential is helpful at this stage to enhance healing and reduce swelling.
Next, the aim is to restore movement with mobilisation of the joint and specific exercises. The muscles around the joint need to be strengthened to provide protection of the injured ligament and balance is of particular importance. Strapping may be helpful to prevent excessive stress during recovery.
