Ice reduces pain by:
1. Decreasing muscle spasm.
2. Decreasing swelling.
3. Decreasing joint stiffness.
How does it work
If ice is applied for 10-15 minutes it increases the blood flow to the area and the skin will turn pink.
NB Ice, if used incorrectly, may cause a BURN. Please follow the instructions carefully.
Method - For A large Area of The Body
1 Fill a cold damp towel with ice cubes (alternatively use a bag of frozen peas, etc.)
2 Position yourself with the limb to be treated fully supported.
3 Rub a small amount of oil (baby oil is suitable) onto the skin of the area to be treated
( this will prevent a burn occurring.)
4 Place the ice cubes/frozen peas wrapped in the damp towel over the area to be treated. Leave this until the skin becomes pink (10-15 minutes).
Method - For A Small Area of The Body
1 Wrap one end of an ice cube in a tissue (this will make it easier to hold)
2 Rub a small amount of oil over the area to be treated.
3 Massage the area with the ice cube until it becomes pink (10-15 minutes)
Exercises should be done before the ice treatment. Ice can be repeated every hour if you have a lot of pain or swelling and twice a day if less painful.
