When a tissue is damaged it becomes inflamed and blood vessels will be broken resulting in bleeding. During this acute stage (up to 48 hours following injury), the aim is to stop the bleeding as soon as possible and reduce the swelling.
The inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury. It allows the cells necessary for repair to get to the area.
The inflammatory phase of healing normally takes 3-5 days. This can be speeded up with Ultrasound Therapy and Interferential Therapy but at the end of the day the body has to repair itself.
During this phase avoid prodding or massaging the damaged area - leave the repair process to take place.
After a few days, the stage of resolution begins when, the cells start to repair the damage.
It takes 6 weeks for tissue repair, but the body continues to remodel after this for up to a year.
