At Woodbridge Physiotherapy Practice we treat patients who have had mastectomy using a very gentle, yet effective technique called Myofascial Release.
We believe that much of the pain and dysfunction associated with breast cancer therapies is a consequence of restrictions in the connective tissue and our approach is to focus on mobilising restrictions in the connective tissue using gentle non-invasive massage and mobilisations.
Pain and restriction are common problems after treatment for breast cancer. In up to 50% of patients, who have had surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy there are symptoms of impaired shoulder movement, lymphoedema, weakness of arm muscles, pain and cording (fibrous scar tissue developing in the arm after lymph nodes have been removed). These symptoms are caused by scarring, adhesions, thickening and fibrosis in the connective tissue.
Exercises are not the answer and in fact exercise too early after mastectomy can lead to swelling if the lymph nodes have been removed. It is considered more beneficial to move gently until about 2 weeks after surgery and only after this time start a more vigorous exercise programme.
Debbie Golding and Robina Hearle have both completed training at The Royal Marsden Hospital in London which is a specialist centre for Cancer Treatment. This training was given by Willlie Furie who is a physiotherapist in private practice in Johannesburg South Africa, who has had an interest in managing patients with breast cancer for many years.
